Stars of The Rodeo

Doreen Rue

Doreen Rue had a great rodeo season in 2005. And she stormed into Dallas ready to show her stuff. But to the surprise of everyone, she failed to place in her best event - Pole Bending. She did place 4th in Barrel Racing for the weekend and received a 5th in the Flag Race on Sunday. But she came away without any championships at the 19th Annual Finals Rodeo.

It was not exactly the results she was hoping for this year. But every invitation to Finals is hard-earned and well-deserved. She'll be working toward another invitation to next year's Finals Rodeo during 2006.

Doreen was born and raised in Minnesota. She joined the North Star Gay Rodeo Association in 1991and participated as a vendor at the gay rodeos. Moving to Texas in the summer of 1993, the opportunity to ride and compete was the beginning of a whole new lifestyle. She competed at her first IGRA rodeo in 1994; her accomplishments for the season resulted in earning the Rookie of the Year award at the 1994 International Gay Rodeo Finals. Doreen has continued to win many buckles and ribbons for the past ten years including the 2002 & 2003 IGRA Finals Barrel Champion titles. Doreen rides Stryker, a fourteen-year-old sorrel quarter horse gelding. Stryker was trained by Dave Stinson of Aubrey Texas. Stryker is well known on the IGRA circuit and was purchased from Darrell Tipps who passed away in 2002. Doreen is a current an active member of both TGRA (Dallas Chapter) and RRRA which are both member associations of the IGRA. Besides competing in gay rodeo, Doreen competes in quarter horse, paint shows, and barrel races. She and her partner of 12 years own and manage an equine conditioning and breeding facility, Change of Pace in Aubrey Texas.

On a career note Doreen is a Social Worker employed by AIDS Services of North Texas, where she is the Chief Operations Officer. This non- profit organization provides medical care and support services to persons with HIV/AIDS in the outer urban and rural areas of North Texas.
